What's Involved

Apprentices will gain experience in principles of network addressing, cloud-based services, methods of communication, fundamentals of security, principles of OSI layers, network protocols and Remote Access Security. The Apprentice will need to complete the following to gain apprenticeship certification:

Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours modules:

Learners and employers will have a range of options to select from that cover each knowledge module of the apprenticeship standard. Learners will usually complete online exams for the relevant professional qualification.

Functional Skills in maths and English:

Candidates should have a minimum
of a Grade C/4 in English & Maths to
enrol on this apprenticeship. 

End-point assessment:

The end-point assessment takes place at the end of the apprentice’s learning & development. The requirement is that the end-point assessment is completed within 3 months from the start of the end-point assessment period.

Delivery

Throughout the apprenticeship, learners will be supported by a dedicated trainer & an employer mentor & receive a blended programme of learning. At the end of the program, learners will complete an end-point assessment that will test their knowledge & practical skills.

Modules that will be delivered in the training are Understanding & Configuring, Networks, Maintaining Systems, Managing & Prioritising Tasks, Securing Systems & Networks, Troubleshooting Issues and Network Cabling.

The length of the programme will differ depending on experience, knowledge and skills development but the course should usually take 15 – 18 months.

Progression

Avenues of progression for successful apprentices include a clear pathway pursuing a career in the following: 

1st & 2nd line support, help desk support, IT analyst, network support, communications technician and maintenance support.

Apprenticeship wages are paid by the employer. They should reflect that the apprentice is in training and must meet the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices. For apprentices over the age of 19, their wages must meet the National Minimum Wage for their age group after their first year as an apprentice (if the programme is longer than 12 months).
